The Boston Celtics could taste the cold champagne after taking a 2-1 series lead against the Golden State Warriors during the NBA Finals. Even after Golden State went on to tie the series at two games apiece, Boston fans envisioned a championship parade floating down their streets for the 18th time in franchise history.
Ultimately, however, Boston was dealt a cold and harsh reality as banner number 18 slipped through their fingers. With a long summer ahead of them, Boston is reportedly wasting no time in their attempts to improve their roster.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Boston, in addition to numerous title contenders, are eager to have a word with Nicolas Batum, the LA Clippers‘ soon-to-be free agent forward.
“It is anticipated that the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, and Utah Jazz will have strong interest in trying to pry away the 14-year veteran from Clipper Land, sources said.”
Nic Batum has plenty to think about
Batum’s interest around the league stems from two solid seasons wearing the Clippers’ white, red, and blue uniform.
Initially, Batum watched helplessly as his once-promising NBA career began floundering in Charlotte. While NBA damnation appeared to be in his immediate future, Batum was able to rehabilitate his career in LA. Through two seasons, Batum has gone on to average 8.2 points and 4.5 rebounds, while playing lockdown hounding defense.
However, while Batum has expressed gratitude for his second act, the versatile forward plans on declining his $3.3 million player option. In doing so, Batum would become an unrestricted free agent.
Although Batum will now field countless offers from several teams who are desperate for services, LA would seem to have a leg up on their competition. Batum’s succinct desire to return to LA, coupled with the franchise holding his bird rights, allowing them to offer him a contract worth north of $10 million, could entice the 33-year-old to remain put in LA for the long haul.
