The dragon fruit is called keumangkon by the people of Thailand. This exotic fruit has several more names: Dragon Fruit, dragon and dragon’s eye. Keumangkon has no resemblance to the organ of vision, such an interpretation, most likely, has its own legend.

It doesn’t matter who calls it and how, the essence of the fruit does not change from that. Dragon fruit is the fruit of a cactus and Dragon Fruit. Dragon fruit is sold in Thailand all year round. In large shopping centres and markets, you can see two varieties of it: with dark fuchsia-coloured pulp and white. The color of the pulp can be determined by the outer leaves. The white flesh is found in pink fruits with greenish leaves. Raspberry pulp has fruits, the leaves of which are painted pink.

The taste of the fruit does not depend on the color of the pulp and often disappoints many, because its taste is inexpressive, a little grassy and sweet with seeds crunchy on the teeth (like kiwi).

To serve a dragon fruit, you need to cut it in half, and then in semicircles. They eat it like a watermelon, i.e. the pulp is eaten and the skin is thrown away. The way of eating fruit can be in a different form, for example, with a spoon, like the same watermelon. Very often dragon fruit is used in fruit salads and cocktails. As you may have guessed, they eat it raw. Dragon fruit is rich in carotene, vitamin C and perfectly quenches thirst in the hot season.

It is grown in almost all countries with a tropical climate, but most of all in Thailand, China, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Pink fruits are common, but there are also yellow ones, which are extremely rare. In order to choose the most delicious and fragrant fruit, you need to determine its ripeness. To do this, you need to slightly press on the fruit: if it is soft, then it is ripe. If you buy a hard fruit, then it will be tasteless, it would even be more correct to say – without much taste. Ripe fruits are very easy to peel by hand, as if rose petals are opening.

Dragon Fruit – an exotic fruit, also known as the dragon’s eye, is the fruit of a liana cactus. The fruit looks like an elongated pink or yellow apple with scales. The taste and color of dragon fruit is similar to figs, bananas or kiwis.

The fruit has a pleasant sweet taste and contains a large number of nutrients, which is why it is widely used in cooking, cosmetology and traditional medicine. It contains practically no fats and proteins but contains a lot of water, carbohydrates and vitamins.

How to choose a ripe Dragon Fruit

To fully appreciate the pleasant and unusual taste of Dragon Fruit, the first step is to choose the right fruit:

  • You need to choose only red or yellow fruits. It is better not to buy completely or partially green fruits, as they will not taste very good.
  • The peel of a mature Dragon Fruit is bright pink or red, without spots. The presence of dark spots indicates that the fruit is overripe.
  • The flesh of a red Dragon Fruit should be white or purple, and that of a yellow Dragon Fruit should be light, with dark seeds.
  • The villi at the end of the fruit are green. Darkened petals indicate the overripeness of the fruit.
  • When you press the fruit, it should be elastic, and slightly soft. Too soft fruit will be overripe and tasteless, and too hard – unripe.
  • Dark spots, wilted scales, dents and damage indicate the unsuitability of the fruit for consumption.

How to cut and clean Dragon Fruit

Once a ripe and fragrant Dragon Fruit has been selected, it should be thoroughly rinsed under running water and then cleaned. You can do this in several ways:

  1. Starting at the top of the fruit, carefully remove the peel with your hands like a banana, leaving the peeled flesh.
  2. Remove some of the skin from the top, bite off a piece of pulp, and continue to peel as you eat the fruit.
  3. Cut the fruit in half with a sharp knife, and scoop out the pulp with a spoon.
  4. Cut the fruit into slices, like an orange, and easily remove the peel from them.

The crust from the Dragon Fruit is removed and thrown away, it is unusable.

Serving fruits to the table

There are various options for serving Dragon Fruit to the table:

  • cutting into slices or cubes;
  • in its natural form – the fruit is cut in half;
  • fruit pulp in a peel basket.

Dragon Fruit can be used both fresh and as an ingredient in a variety of dishes. For example, you can make a refreshing snack based on yogurt with honey, a smoothie with coconut milk and rum, and a salad with seafood from it.

How to eat Dragon Fruit

Dragon Fruit is eaten raw. It can be peeled and gnawed like an apple, eaten in half with a spoon, or cut into slices or cubes. The pulp is consumed both separately and in combination with other products in salads, desserts and other dishes. Also, the fruit can be used to make jam, jelly, yoghurt and sweets. It is sometimes used as an ingredient in alcoholic cocktails.

The pulp of Dragon Fruit contains many black small seeds. They are edible and contain many nutrients. If the bones are swallowed whole, they are not digested but contribute to the normalization of the digestive system. And if you chew them, then a lot of useful substances will enter the body.

Dragon Fruit is best consumed chilled. So its unusual taste will be revealed as brightly as possible. If the fruit is too sweet, the pulp can be sprinkled with a little lemon juice. This combination of flavours is very unusual and interesting.
