Matthew Perry has revealed he had a huge crush on Jennifer Aniston both before and during their time on Friends – but was turned down for her ‘lack of interest’
The Chandler Bing star, 53, who starred alongside Rachel Green actress, 53, on the iconic show, said he was “immediately taken in” by the star during their first meeting – detailed in an excerpt from his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Great Terrible Thing.
The star said he called Aniston before they started filming Friends in an attempt to impress her with two acting roles he booked – but she was reportedly unimpressed.

He wrote in the book, “It was obvious that made her think I liked her too much, or in the wrong way.”
He then asked her out, with the beauty suggesting that they remain friends instead, to which Perry replied, “[We] can’t be friends!’
The two actors were then brought together for their first Friends table reading in 1994, with Perry saying, “We were able to sail past the past and focus on the fact that we both got the best job Hollywood had to offer.” .’
Perry said he was still attracted to Aniston as they filmed the show, and that he “often over-analyzed” every conversation they had, but slowly got over her because of the “deafening lack of interest” of the star.

The Odd Couple star said he was “long over her” when Aniston started dating his future husband Brad Pitt in 1998 and was able to have conversations with her “without getting awkward.”
While Perry’s on-screen relationship with Aniston also remained platonic, they shared kisses on the show, including a liplock in the season 10 episode, The One Where The Stripper Cries—which features a flashback to Chandler and Ross’ college days.
Perry’s reveal comes after Aniston and onscreen co-star/love David Schwimmer confessed that they were in love when filming began on Friends in 1994 — with the reveal during the 2021 HBO Max reunion special.
“I mean, the first season I was very much in love with Jen. At one point we were crushing hard on each other,” revealed David.
David explained: “But it was like two ships passing, because one of us was always in a relationship and we never crossed that line.

Matt LeBlanc, who played Joey Tribbiani, jokingly said, “Bulls**t.”
Jennifer said she had a chat with Ross prior to their character’s first kiss.
“Honestly, I remember once saying to David, ‘It’s going to be such a shame if the first time you and I actually kiss is on national television,’ Jennifer said. ‘
Jennifer commented, “Yeah, the first time we kissed was at that coffee shop. So we channeled all our adoration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel.”
David and Jennifer also spent time together during rehearsal breaks, with David recalling them “cuddling on the couch.”
“We’d spoon and fall asleep on the couch,” Jennifer said.
Footage of their cuddly characters aired during the reunion special, and David added, “How didn’t everyone know we were in love?”
However, Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry both said they “knew” about David and Jennifer’s attraction to each other.

In the end David said it was ‘a situation we couldn’t do anything about’, and Courteney added it was for the best: ‘How wonderful in the end. Because if you had [acted on it] and it didn’t work, it wouldn’t have been so great [on the show].’
The cast of Friends had an “unspoken rule” not to date.
Although Jennifer, David, Matt, Matthew and Courteney all saw their sitcom alter egos interacting at different points in the show, the group — along with castmate Lisa Kudrow — insisted their chemistry never spilled over into real life because they were determined weren’t messing with the band they had on screen.
Matthew said, “There was a rule, it was very important to the six of us that we maintained a friendship. Hooking up may have caused a strangeness that could mess things up. And to this day we are really good friends.’
David added: “We didn’t want to jeopardize any of the great relationships and friendships we had built. It was kind of an unspoken rule.’
Ross and Rachel’s on-off romance captivated viewers for ten seasons, culminating in their iconic reunion in the final scene of “I Got Off the Plane.”
