A Russian strike on a maternity ward has killed a newborn baby, Ukrainian officials say.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has called the Kremlin ‘evil’ following reports of the tragedy in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.

Rockets slammed into the Vilnianska Hospital overnight while a woman was in labour with a doctor by her side.

Rescuers say the mother and doctor were rescued from the rubble of the two-storey building, but the baby died.

Grief fills the hearts of Ukrainians, Zaporizhzhia governor Oleksandr Starukh has said.

He wrote on Telegram: ‘Overnight, Russian monsters fired huge rockets at the small maternity ward of Vilnyansk hospital.

‘Sorrow fills our hearts — a baby who had just appeared in this world was killed.’

President Zelensky warned there will be consequences for the ‘terror and murder’ brought to his country this morning.

‘The enemy has once again decided to try to achieve with terror and murder what it wasn’t able to achieve for nine months and won’t be able to achieve’, he said.

‘Instead, it will only be held to account for all the evil it has brought to our country’.

Russia hasn’t directly commented on the baby’s death, but has denied targeting civilians in the past.

Emergency services shared a video of rescuers trying to pull out a man trapped waist-deep in the rubble of what appears to be the maternity ward.

No one else was trapped in the wreckage, it’s believed.

It’s not the first time Vladimir Putin’s troops have been accused of hitting a maternity ward.

On March 9, at least four people died and 16 were injured when a hospital was bombed in the port city of Mariupol.

President Zelensky begged NATO to close the airspace over Ukraine after, saying: ‘How much longer will the world be an accomplice ignoring terror? Close the sky right now! Stop the killings! You have power but you seem to be losing humanity.’
