The US World Cup soccer team will soon be feasting on Thanksgiving dinner, but unfortunately for their English rivals, it won’t be until the two teams play at the World Cup on Friday.

The USMNT take on England on Friday afternoon in Group B, the showpiece of the group and a crucial game for Gregg Berhalter’s men in their bid to reach the knockout stages.

And to give his team every chance to be fresh and energized before the game, Berhalter postponed the US team’s Thanksgiving dinner to Saturday night, according to The Athletic — a full 24 hours after the England game.

It is apparently held with 205 relatives and friends at the luxury team hotel in Doha, Qatar.

The US team will be staying at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski Hotel on The Pearl, a man-made peninsula on the Persian Gulf.

Suites at the Kempinski, the team’s base until at least November 29 (the last round of Group B games), can cost as much as $16,500 per night

It will mean dinner will have a celebratory feel if the US can upset the odds and get something out of the game.

If England wins, it could still prove to be valuable team-bonding time ahead of the final group game against Iran, which the US will likely need to win anyway to ensure World Cup progress.

But for now, attention is firmly on England.

The USA started its World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Wales, while England looked good with an emphatic 6-2 victory over Iran. England book a place in the knockout stage if they beat the US.

“Every Thanksgiving, probably 30 to 40 of my family and friends all gather at my mom and dad’s house in Park Ridge, New Jersey,” said American goaltender Matt Turner of his usual festivities.

So yeah, we’re going to miss that. Mom and Dad are here, so it will be a little different for the folks back home this time.”

The US’ final group game is against Iran on Tuesday, November 29 – so plenty of time to digest a big meal before returning to football.
